For those of you who have not joined up yet, its a great site with lots of informative facts and plenty of statistics along with plenty of sensible blogs, something that is missing from this site for sure.
It's always difficult and sometimes pointless to apportion blame for a tragedy in hindsight. In any tragedy it is often the case that many little things have gone wrong, and it is the accumulation of errors which leads to catastrophe. You only fully appreciate the gravity of a mistake by its consequences.
But in the inquest into the death of 17-year-old schoolboy David Iredale, who died of thirst after becoming lost in the Blue Mountains on a bushwalk, it seems that the failure of triple-0 to respond in any useful or compassionate way to his calls of distress was a major factor.
David had dialled triple-0 six times and told NSW ambulance service operators which walking track he was on, that it was an "emergency", that he was hot, felt like fainting, couldn't walk far and they should send a helicopter. His information, while imprecise on location, would have been invaluable to searchers with local knowledge, before they finally found his body in a dry creek bed eight days later.
The operators involved are just products of their environment. They where just following managements example. What does the service expect.

HUNDREDS of angry paramedics have quit their union and formed a breakaway group to fight for pay rises and stop endemic bullying, which has plagued the service for decades and driven some staff to suicide.
About 300 paramedics had joined the Emergency Medical Service Protection Association since it was launched a month ago, with another six joining each day, because they felt unsupported by the Health Services Union and were "fed up" with years of dissatisfaction, disillusionment and low morale, spokesman Grant Jennison said yesterday.
"Paramedics have been very unhappy with their union for a very long time. We've had to put up with large pay cuts, having resources removed and constant bullying and harassment with people being too scared to speak out," Mr Jennison said.
In February about 3000 paramedics called an indefinite strike, refusing to deal with non-urgent cases, process paperwork or follow the directions of the allocation system - where patients are taken only to hospitals with spare beds. The strike was blocked in the Industrial Relations Commission eight hours before it was to start.
Staff were angry that a new award, introduced in September, brought pay cuts, handed rescue operations to the NSW Fire Brigade, axed meal penalties and failed to resolve ongoing problems with the computerised dispatch system.
Mr Jennison said the Queensland branch of the association, formed last year, was seeking registration with the Industrial Relations Commission to give it more "industrial clout" but both branches had already retained a barrister and a solicitor to send letters to managers deemed to bully staff or deny award conditions.
In April 2005, Christine Hodder, the first woman to work at the Cowra ambulance station, killed herself after years of bullying. At Wellington, more than 50 allegations of bullying and harassment were made against a station manager, Rod Althofer, over 10 years.
But the association may face problems getting registered.
The director of the Workplace Research Centre at the University of Sydney, Dr John Buchanan, said yesterday: "If there is a pre-existing union which is convenient for an employee to join, they may find it almost impossible to get another one up.
"There may be a flurry of activity now but getting from mobilisation to organisation is a big step. When you start paying the hourly rate of a lawyer you will bankrupt yourself pretty quickly but there is no doubt this is a huge vote of no confidence in the union."

You got that right. i worked 14 hour nightshift the other night at newcastle with 20 minutes on station and that was to restock. we gobbled down pizza between jobs. by the end of the night the ambulance smelt like a dominos pizza delivery van. the patients said itt smelt good though.
P.S i even managed to down a couple of pieces on a cas run. made the steering wheel sticky though. now management might understand why we need to keep alcowipes.
To the clowns that are bagging the ambos for stepping that guy out of the car , GET A GRIP!!!, Why the fuck would you spend an hour piss farting around with extrication, when you are just blocks from a trauma centre? (about 400 metres) what interventions would you have done that would have made a difference to the outcome? Do you really think that 500 ml of hartmanns is going to save him? Good job I say, gave that guy the best chance he had. Remember this poor guy died during surgery after being hit by a rock, not because he stepped out of a car.

I have seen people with serious C-spine injuries walk, usally with unstable fracture.
The problem I have with him walking is how amateur it would have looked if he collapsed mid stride.

ust a quick note to you all about member access to the forum..
If anyone hears that a colleague has applied to become an EMSPA member and has not yet received their forum or site username and password access inform them to check their 'junk mail' folder. We have become aware that some of the free public domain email providers e.g. Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail etc have very sensitive spam filters and members may actually have received their access details but are unaware it maybe contained in their junk mail folder...
IT administrator has sorted this problem with these providers but the access details may need to be resent. If you can pass this info onto to anyone who mentions to you.
Generally, anyone waiting more than 2 weeks for access may need to contact the IT man for help with this issue. Forum access is usually processed within 4-5 days of receipt of your application.
No they have fixed it now.It won't happen again....until the next time.

Yes they do. When i got a letter from the HSU demanding back fees I rang them and got a lovely lady on the phone. When I tried to ring to cancel the thing nobody took my call. Well they have the new link on their webpage now and are going to keep us informed of all the decisions they make for us so maybe we should all give them a second chance.

Cause they haven't had the last 12 years that I know of to forge forward with a better Award and working conditions.
If you think giving the H.S.U another chance at this the 11th hour is the way to go then I am afraid you are setting yourself up for failure once again. Consider the precedent set by them in the last 12/12 alone, an out and out failure to be able to show teeth in the face of negotiation with the Dept. of Health.
Cringeworthy to be sitting there watching the constantly stalled and poorly considered negotiations from the H.S.U and going 'these guys are negotiating on my behalf!??'
So what I am only down a couple of hundred dollars every week now because of deleted call-outs and missed lunch breaks. Remember what those penalties where for - deviations to Award practices, they weren't just a bonus for the hell of it!
Really, give me a break!
Give the new Paramedic association the support they and you need at this early set-up stage.
Enlist and participate, that is the only way for us to make a difference about us.
Give it a run for 12/12 or 18/12 and then make a decision based upon your experiences with this new association.
But we all need to be aware that if we again let the majority of the association work and follow up to be done by a small few, then we may be setting ourselves up again for more of the same.
It is up to us to not only support the new association, but to participate in all aspects.
Whether that is helping to enlist, providing concise and succinct information to the executive, and being pro-active within your workplace to ensure that you are attaining the type of job satisfaction that you need to remain focused on the job.
All I really care about is that I am getting the remuneration that I believe is appropriate, and am working under Award conditions that are conducive to me being able to do my job with satisfaction, up to date equipment, and ongoing personal development and training.
This is the mandate that the ASNSW has currently but unfortunately dropped the ball on, and which every time the H.S.U tries to pick the ball up again it bumbles and fumbles it every which way like a silly Benny Hill skit.
Stay with the H.S.U at your own peril, but stop bitching and moaning about different workplace situations that the H.S.U has been in partnership and has actually allowed to happen if you are not prepared to put up when there is an opportunity staring you straight in the eyes.

Whoa whoa whoaaaa! I was kidding!!! If you read it again I said they wanted my back fees which would suggest I haven't been a memebr for some time and I haven't and never will be again. An of duty ambo and fireman rescue a bunch of people from a burning house and what do we see in today's papers, a nice bug half page photo of the fireman. Not one pic of the ambo. Now with all the shit going on at the moment wouldn't you think the svc via the PR dept would take the opportunity to try and raise it's profile just a little bit by including the ambo in the photo as well? Another fuck up on behalf of the svc and another reason for a complete overhaul starting at the top.

Yeah it's a pity our people don't get recognised for the great things that they do EVERYDAY but the Firies sure know how to put their members names up in lights whenever they do anything. Just after the Asian Tsunami disaster a Firey got a medal and a big photo and writeup in the Manly Daily and all he did was pack a crate full of supplies. And he would have been paid overtime to do it!!! I think our media people need to start doing their job.

How will that work?
Because if the service do anything that is unlawful or deemed to be harassment towards a member our lawyer will take legal action against them. Unlike HSU who have never addressed any of the issues of bullying because they won't go into battle against managers who belong to their union.

Rest assured if you catch the Roach Flu you will be looked after by the service. The service in conjunction with it's partner the HSU have come up with a plan to look after their employees. They will not only pay them a disability based on their old pay scale (you know the one where you actually got paid a wage) but will send either a HSU delegate OR a high ranking member of 'ambulance' to check on your well being at least once a week.....

What problems are ECPs targeting?
ECPs are attending patients at the lower end of the gene pool, patients whom have no idea or to stupid to think for themselves.
Will go to only P2 (cold) cases?
No as the service will not employ more staff they are able to attend all cases, however with these cost savings we are creating more management positions.
Will calling an always result in non-transport?
No not always however delaying transport can at times have an adverse impact on patient outcome which may result in death there by cutting out the re-offender.
The 1.4% was extra token for us and was recently decided, however due to the backpay of this it will be given after june 30 there by back pay will not be applicable.

Nepean Hospital staff will hold a stop work rally on Thursday, 30 April 2009 at 12 noon over the Sydney West Area’s decision not to fill vacancies throughout the entire Area Health Service. The stop work rally will be attended by speech pathologists, physiotherapists, cleaners, administration officers, kitchen staff, social workers, radiographers, security officers and maintenance workers.

VICTORIA is preparing for its first ambulance strike in 36 years after union members voted unanimously to take industrial action.
Ambulance Employees Australia said weary paramedics had fallen asleep at the wheel and administered wrong drugs because they did not have enough time off between shifts.
They have called for a minimum 10-hour break between shifts, compared with eight hours under the current award.
But Ambulance Victoria has said the fatigue issue was one of 175 union claims, which it said sought $800 million from pay talks.
Talks between Ambulance Victoria and the union have broken down.
At a meeting in Melbourne on Wednesday night, Ambulance Victoria paramedics voted unanimously to take industrial action, with AEA Victorian secretary Steve McGhie refusing to rule out stop-work action.
Meetings in Shepparton, Seymour and Ballarat this week also unanimously supported the motion, with further meetings planned for Warrnambool, Colac, Geelong, Mildura, Swan Hill, Echuca and Bendigo in the next week.
Mr McGhie said paramedics were angry and felt the government was not listening to them.
"For an entire year we've negotiated in good faith for proper rest breaks and fair wages. We have got nowhere," he said in a statement.
"All they are seeking is what paramedics in other states already have, longer rest breaks and fair wages.
"Paramedics don't want to take industrial action but it seems they have been left with no alternative."
Mr McGhie urged Health Minister Daniel Andrews to intervene in the dispute.
A union survey of 350 paramedics last year found many only get five hours' sleep between shifts.
Some had fallen asleep at the wheel of their ambulances and admitted to making clinical errors because of the workload

Today on the Central Coast a crew from Ettalong who had not dined and was flogged all day tried to sign off at 1700 hrs. Northern Ops replied that as per the supervisor he was not permitted to sigh off and had to remain on duty until 1800 hrs even though he had not dined. Correct me if i am wrong but was there a letter forwarded to the ASNSW in regards to finishing duty if the crew had not dined.
So my understanding is the service can neglect to dine you, flogg you all day and refuse you to conplete duty at 1700hrs making you work all day.

In case you don't know not every paramedic has been in the job 15 years or more....Did you start your service at day one or 15 years? EMSPA has officers joining with a wide cross section of experience! Did you apply for either of these RLO positions you whinge about?? I bet not. I was at a HSU meeting a couple of weeks ago,,I had a conversation with M.Williamson.
He said the HSU dosn"t need Delegates or Sub Branchs.
This is why it dosn"t matter what we vote on! It won"t get in anyway.What a 1 sided Union this is.Are we being run by the Ambulance Svc or the HSU.
