He is having a very difficult time. Some days are OK, others well they are difficult. We did find good treatment at last however so we have found that tunnel.

I’m really looking forward to the outcome of the union deletes meeting on the 15th November. From what I have worked out by reading this forum there will be 4 categories of union delegates on the day.
Category 1. Delegates with written resignations including there own (like the boys and girls from Ettalong) who have the full intention of resigning on the day along with there own members.
Category 2. Delegates with written resignations including there own who have no intention of resigning on the day but feel by presenting their resignations they can force HSU to do something.
Category 3. Delegates with no written resignations from anyone because they never really talk to their members anyway.
Category 4. Delegates who don’t know the meeting is on. In fact even if they did know the meeting was on they got so pissed the night before they woundn’t be able to find their keys and pants to get there on time anyway.
Throw into the mix some very big egos, some self obsesed know it alls, some delegates who bark very loudly to get their own way and you have got all the ingredients from a very interesting meeting. There may even be violence!

My son – (by the same name by the way) who has grown into a fine young man who would make a wonderful ambo also expressed a strong desire to join the service. Many people said I was doing him a disservice by talking him out of it and that I should take it as a huge compliment that he wants to follow in his father’s footsteps – But talk him out of it I did!!!!
Having spent the last 19 years doing my best to nurture and protect him, I could not drop the ball now and leave him to the mercy of the utter bastards that comprise the management of the ambulance service in NSW. Put simply, I love and care for him faaaarrrr too much to do that.
Truly, after 27 years – I can count on one hand the bosses I have considered to be decent, reasonable or have even a skerrick of integrity – and most who were on that hand have since retired - the rest are simply sub human nasty little men. I find it so hard to understand why that is so because almost without exception – the road ambo’s I know are genuinely compassionate and decent blokes. When I think about that I can understand why they want to get off the road and go up in rank – they are devoid of the compassion needed to work on the road so they can’t cut it on the road – What I can’t understand is, since we all have to start as on road ambo’s what the hell attracted them to the job in the first place.
Anyway, it sounds like your mind is made up Ash, so all I can say is take care when you get out there old mate, and good luck– ya gunna need it

Many years ago, when HSU was HREA, a group of high ranking senior managers, who where also Masons, set up a system where the rank and file and management were in the same union.
You may have heard the term "the Brothers" from some of the oldies in the job.. Well they did exist.
Having everyone in the same union gave the Brothers ultimate power. They ran Sydney Division, formally CDA, which ran the rest of the State. The Brothers didn’t like anyone from State Headquarters at Rozelle telling them what to do.
With the help of the rank and files own union, the HSU, the Brothers could do what they wanted. They could blame a CEO, an Executive or even the Ambulance Board for anything that went wrong in the service. However, most of the things that did go wrong were generally through there own incompetence as they had control.
At one stage we where losing a CEO on average once a year. I think the Brothers even had the Ambulance Board sacked through their own, and HSU’s political connections. The Brothers wanted to keep control.
I could go on, but the bottom line is, and to his credit, Greg Rochford managed to sack, one way or another, most of the Brothers.
But the system that the Brothers set up in the first place still exists where MANAGEMENT IS IN THE SAME UNION AS THE RANK AND FILE with Williamson the State Secretary for both parties.
So there you have it. Your in your bosses union. They have control, you think you have control, but you don’t.
The system that we have now has destabilised our wonderful service politically for many years.
Ambos need to be in a union where there is a strict divide between the interests of management and the interests of the rank and file.

What I read is of great interest.
I mentioned in my earlier blogg that there are ways to really shake up the ASNSW and HSU management.
When Steve Whinfield, Graeme Webster, Mick Willis and others were interviewed by Morgan and Banks for the new re-structured Service, a certain "other" was asked by a Board member why industrial activity had escalated during his tenure as state superintendent/CEO.
No, its not THAT New Zealander either.
This question indicates a great sensitivity to such issues. You will also notice that "an ability to work in an industrially sensitive environment” has been placed on recent senior position descriptions.
"Smooth industrial relations" is, believe it or not, a central and key performance indicator for many a performance contract. Its guaranteed to be in Rochford’s.
The only real exception is when an organisation is going through an extensive and distinct three process change otherwise known as
1) Thawing,
2) Implementing the change and,
3) Re-freezing.
The ASNSW is in currently in the phase 2 "implementing" aspect of the change process.
You may remember Rochford hired a consultant to look at implementing a C and C process.
This "C and C" was a Command and Control process.
1) The PSCU was borne from it;
2) Systemic name changes to senior titles occurred i.ie, Sector and station managers 9delete sector superintendent and station officer], Divisional Managers [delete divisional superintendent], and General Manager of Operations (delete State Superintendent] came to fruition;
3) The dilution of the ranking structure to civilian suits and placing the General Manager of Operations lower down on the CC list of circulars;
4) Utilisation of civilians to sector manager roles (remember that one failed);
5) Placing unsworn staff
in charge of sworn operational units utilising powerdul staff personnel;
6) Having senior staff reporting directly to teh CEO instead of other sworn senior managers;
7) Culture change by attacking union officials by making them more vulnerable to continuous attacks and complaints thus reducing the numbers applying for such positions;
8) Fighting every unfair dismissal with disproportionate effort and funds to ensure “wins” which makes the work force bow to pressure;
9) Transmitting incorrect statistics that give a false picture of a "non change culture" to Health and the State Government;
10) Weeding out sworn "change agents" with promotions to positions guaranteed to fail. This is incorrectly reported to Health that sworn staff just don't have the necessary skills to run the Service;
11) Not recognising formal tertiary qualifications and burying them in the supposed merit principle.
Other area health service's actually pay senior staff to attain MBA's and post graduate degree's. Rochford did not recognise the Bachelor of Health Science Degree. Now you are unqualified for outside jobs.
12) Removing the ASNSW's involvement from the document that sets the working parameters for every area health service - "The Partnerships in Health Document."
13) Make all communications come from a one central point. Gone are the local newsletters of a social nature from coordination centres and divisional superintendents. Incomes “Sirens”. Remember when ambulance public relations
used to actually do that? Now P/R just handles politically correct issues with our local liaison officers hamstrung by Rozelle.
See?
You may well laugh when the supposed "brothers" were eliminated - but now you are being slowly screwed by Rochford and his mates at the HSU and you don't even realise it.

Now that you know that, ask yourself – do the deplorable, destructive and nonsense comments you read here sound like they come from the ambo’s you were ready to call in a time of crisis - do they sound like they come from the ambo’s you previously trusted but may now have doubts towards – do they sound like the comments of the blokes (or ladies) who walked thru your door to come to your aid when you needed it - or do they sound like they come from people trying to discredit the critics or those who have a niche to defend.

Hi all just heard about this blog thought I'd say hi.
I'm an Ambo with 15+ years service, I love the job, always have and hopefully always will. I don't have PTSD and as far as I know neither do the majority of my colleagues. I do unfortunately know colleagues and friends who have committed suicide, attempted suicide aor at least contemplated it.
Wife/mum, yours is obviuosly an extreme case that I'm sure many others have also encountered, I do believe you are being a little harsh on young Ash who wants to go to uni and study pre hospital care or what ever it is they call these days. Ash it's not all doom and gloom, it's actually a great job.
Do we need more pay? Hell yes.
Are the majority of bosses f/wits? Of course they are but when they're only promoting ladder climbing suckholes whith 5 minutes service what do you expect?
Is the union toothless & run by individuals with personal agendas? It would appear so.
Did the Bosses, the Union, GIO etc treat Wife's hubby along with many other fine Ambo's like shit when they were in their hour of need? You bet they did.
Do we need better working conditions? Who doesn't.
Is this such a terrible job? No it's not.
We need to work together as a collective to get union working for us. Pressure our bosses to work for us. We need to stop slagging out the job because the job itself is what the majority love doing. United we stand divided we fall.
Anyway thats my 2 cents worth and that's probably all it's worth.

Many years ago, when HSU was HREA, a group of high ranking senior managers, who where also Masons, set up a system where the rank and file and management were in the same union.
You may have heard the term "the Brothers" from some of the oldies in the job.. Well they did exist.
Having everyone in the same union gave the Brothers ultimate power. They ran Sydney Division, formally CDA, which ran the rest of the State. The Brothers didn’t like anyone from State Headquarters at Rozelle telling them what to do.
With the help of the rank and files own union, the HSU, the Brothers could do what they wanted. They could blame a CEO, an Executive or even the Ambulance Board for anything that went wrong in the service. However, most of the things that did go wrong were generally through there own incompetence as they had control.
At one stage we where losing a CEO on average once a year. I think the Brothers even had the Ambulance Board sacked through their own, and HSU’s political connections. The Brothers wanted to keep control.
I could go on, but the bottom line is, and to his credit, Greg Rochford managed to sack, one way or another, most of the Brothers.
But the system that the Brothers set up in the first place still exists where MANAGEMENT IS IN THE SAME UNION AS THE RANK AND FILE with Williamson the State Secretary for both parties.
So there you have it. Your in your bosses union. They have control, you think you have control, but you don’t.
The system that we have now has destabilised our wonderful service politically for many years.
Ambos need to be in a union where there is a strict divide between the interests of management and the interests of the rank and file.

Good to chat with you. At least you acknowledge the hold the brothers had over our service. You forgot to mention the nepotism and corruption that was a good part of their tenure.
No our system is not perfect, there is still allot to do. Having a separate union from management would be a start.
Education and clinical development, Malone and McCarthy have stuffed our culture by forgetting about senior staff especially in the country, this has allot to do with the problems we are having at the moment. When I joined the job a senior clinician meant something.

Alot of comments have related to our pay rate. I agree it's crap. We are the ONLY PROFESSIONAL body that has the payrate of an unskilled labourer. My daughter was on more money as a chook factory worker. An issue that is of equal importance, is the archaic manner management treats us generally. They criticise and berate officers for having time off work and they are too stupid or arrogant or ignorant to even BOTHER to look at the jobs these officers have been to in the previous weeks. God forbid that anyone gets sick on a rostered day thats what days off are for!!!!There is no de-briefing process (unless being told by the sector manager "to hurry up and get back on road as there are routines to do" is de-briefing). Problems with rosters and leave are swept under the carpet and if an officer DARES too disagree with any of the haemorrhoids that hang out of the backside of the sector manager, they are vilified and harrassed further. I wonder why so many officers are stressed out, turn to alcohol, self injure, attempt suicide and unfortunately actually commit suicide? The managers are all equally accountable and if this was a privately owned organisation these people would lose their jobs and be open to civil legal action. Let's do something for us it's obvious we all want the same thing.
Senior Management in the same union ?... Brothers admitting they used to run the show for years ?... HSU Officials doing absolutely nothing for year after year after year ?? I’m really looking forward to the outcome of the union deletes meeting on the 15th November. From what I have worked out by reading this forum there will be 4 categories of union delegates on the day.
Category 1. Delegates with written resignations including there own (like the boys and girls from Ettalong) who have the full intention of resigning on the day along with there own members.
Category 2. Delegates with written resignations including there own who have no intention of resigning on the day but feel by presenting their resignations they can force HSU to do something.
Category 3. Delegates with no written resignations from anyone because they never really talk to their members anyway.
Category 4. Delegates who don’t know the meeting is on. In fact even if they did know the meeting was on they got so pissed the night before they woundn’t be able to find their keys and pants to get there on time anyway.
Throw into the mix some very big egos, some self obsesed know it alls, some delegates who bark very loudly to get their own way and you have got all the ingredients from a very interesting meeting. Crikey! There may even be violence!
Iam looking forward to the outcome of the delegates meeting to.
Iam more interested to see just how many members are prepared to stand up for themselves and finally be united with each other.
It will be interesting to see how many of you out there who say you are going to send in your resignations and who really does....
there is only 1 way to be united and that is to mass resignations.

That reason is i believe that those who do not have the power to fight for themselves, deserve the right to ban together with others and HELP one another to stop those that would force mis treatment on them as individuals. I believe in the ideal of a strong union with all my heart ! i cannot tell you how passionate i am about being part of and supporting a good union, but it is important to never lose sight of WHY you are part of a union and to continually re-evaluate your your strategy and success.

I think some of the delegates have got something to answer for.
Firstly they accept on behalf of their members an interim 4%.
Now wether they beleive they made the decision due to the time constraints thrust upon them by the HSU. (and don't tell me the HSU could not of asked for more time, I mean isn't wasn't getting heard till may next year so what was the hurry).
So even making the decision for their members under this (ILLEGAL) condition, why have they NOT gone back to their members via a sub-branch meeting and explain why they made the decision and then get FEED BACK from their staff, so when they go to this state wide meeting tommorrow they would be representing the wishes of their sub-branch.
But not to have any communication with their members about the 4% or meeting tommorrow makes it painfully clear they are running their own agenda's.
Well don't let them come back to you after this delegates meeting spinning you lies. The minutes will be posted for all to see.

Many people are using other peoples names to confuse others on this blog I was using the name SPIDER for quiet some time. But typically the HSU thugs/yes men out there have used this name to pervert/corrupt the points that I made.
I will now use various names but only deal with facts for people to consider.
Lets start with the 4/5 upgrade promised 7 years ago accepted by HSU as part of accepting the P1 upgrade.
What has HSU done about it to hold management to their word. Nothing !
Because these delegates have no idea what the term honour means let alone having any themselves. They are politically driven yes men who follow others with power to protect there own weak characters.

Why would they? It is not their site, it is some unofficial site that anyone has access to. Did anyone call for any sub branch meetings or state council meeting and get a motion passed that every member be notified of this site and the many differing ideas on it?
I have no knowledge of it, our sub branch keeps us very well informed. I even talked to our state president about it yesterday and he knows of the site but has not looked at it.
I imagine that he has many other things to do rather than read some anonymous and mostly aimless comments that frequently degenerate into unintelligible diatribe.

Has there been a Union Rep come to the station since?? Even though two Officers on station ARE HSU members. – NO and we are co-joined with the Hospital, and yes the Reps have been in the Hospital to see Hospital staff…………fair and equal representation – I ask you.
I make the following observation: if you had some ambulance equipment that was faulty – would you use it??
If you had something that was broken, you would throw it away!!! OR you would FIX it.
