What the politicians are saying

I got an email today from a non-ambo who's taken an interest. They had sent out an email to various politicians, and got a reply back from the NSW Shadow Minister for Health, Jillian Skinner. If they get a reply from Reba Meagher or Tony Abbot, or anyone else, they'll forward them on to me and we'll publish them here too.

For now, here's what Jillian Skinner had to say:

I've been raising these issues on behalf of ambulance officers for a long time. They've been contacting me because they feel they don't get a hearing from their union, the Ambulance Service or the NSW Minister and her government. I've asked questions in parliament, raised their concerns through the media etc It got so problematic for the Minister a couple of months ago that she set up yet another (useless) inquiry!

The only way to keep the pressure on is for ambos to keep sending me material - worksheets, case studies, rosters, photos or ambulances banked up etc etc. I will not divulge the source if that is requested.

It's great to see Jillian supporting us as well as Barry did when he was Shadow Health Minister 2 years ago.

The more faults in the health system we report to her dept, the more pressure she can put on the government.

they are all whinging about williamson, and the HSU being labor stooges.

if that is the case, i can't see labor winning the federal election.

i mean if they can do this to just one group of people, imagine what they could do to the whole country

you might want to take a closer look into the rapid rise of mr willis's spouse while you are focused on the ambos

but most interesting of all is why this service now has to advertise for staff when before rochford they banging down the doors to get in. now they are banging down the doors to get OUT

You guys should get active.

If your union is not doing their job then make it well known and demand better. Make your pay and conditions an election issue, get both sides to commit to an immediate improvement as soon as they are elected. Form an alliance with groups like http://www.getup.org.au/about/contact/
Long term mediation hurts you because you are the weaker side. Politicians only take action when something is front page. You have the real power, use it or lose it. Good luck in the fight

I think a summary is in order....maybe the media might be interested in this.

Allot of ambos have not heard about this site yet so their will be more survey results.

A fully qualified Paramedic 1 doesn't earn much more than a shop assistant on casual rates.

Michael Williamson, Health Services Union State Secretary, is the senior vice president for the NSW labour party and will not go in hard over our wage claim while labour is in power. Ambos are fed up.

Craig Thompson is a Federal Labour Candidate and also the National Secretary for Health Services Union, again will not go in hard over our wage claim while labour is in power. Ambos are fed up

We need our own union not managements union. All of our Senior Managers are in the same union as the rank and file. There needs to be transparency and a strict divide between the interests of management and the interests of ambos. With this system Senior Managers can agenda set, manipulate the rank and file all with the help of Williamson and the ambos own Health Services Union.

The are still stations in the state of NSW that do not have double officer crewing. That’s right officers working alone. Kangaroo Valley, Merriwa, Stroud and Murrurundi we know about so far. How do you do a cardiac arrest by yourself when you backup could be 30 mins away.

Education and Professional development have a lot to answer for the state of our appauling Corporate Culture survey results. They have been providing more opportunities for junior officers, forgetting about experienced officers, especially in the country for years. Being a senior officer used to mean something in this service

Greg Rochford our CEO is good man. I think he has weeded out alot of corruption in the service I think he just has a lot of weirdos working for him. (the ambos pay rise is not up to Rochford it's up to Health).

I'm the wife of an ambo who has been in the job for over 20 years, and it's pretty obvious no one is doing any fighting on behalf of you all especially the Union. After reading this site I have emailed information to Alan Jones on 2GB re Michael Williamson being president of HSU and NSW Labour rep as well as Craig Thompson Labour Federal Member and HSU Secretary - I think this is definately a conflict of interest. I have also asked people to write to their local members and others and will continue to forward info where I can. Mary-Anne, these Ambo's are people just like you and I, they are writing these comments in their own time and own homes, most are probably angry and depressed because they do traumatic and depressing jobs with little or no thanks despite being VERY professional and caring when on the job for a very unprofessional wage and in system which cares little for the morale of its employees yet most of these people still enjoy what they actually do but like all of us they want respect, thanks and the appropriate pay like other such workers - fire brigade, nurses etc and remember the ambo's have to be make on the spot decisions with no background on the patient and no fancy equipment - they are also first on the scene to witness the devastation that a car wreck has made to children, teenagers, parents etc

Many years ago, when HSU was HREA, a group of high ranking senior managers, who where also Masons, set up a system where the rank and file and management were in the same union.

You may have heard the term "the Brothers" from some of the oldies in the job.. Well they did exist.

Having everyone in the same union gave the Brothers ultimate power. They ran Sydney Division, formally CDA, which ran the rest of the State. The Brothers didn’t like anyone from State Headquarters at Rozelle telling them what to do.

With the help of the rank and files own union, the HSU, the Brothers could do what they wanted. They could blame a CEO, an Executive or even the Ambulance Board for anything that went wrong in the service. However, most of the things that did go wrong were generally through there own incompetence as they had control.

At one stage we where losing a CEO on average once a year. I think the Brothers even had the Ambulance Board sacked through their own, and HSU’s political connections. The Brothers wanted to keep control.

I could go on, but the bottom line is, and to his credit, Greg Rochford or CEO managed to sack, one way or another, most of the Brothers.

But the system that the Brothers set up in the first place still exists where MANAGEMENT IS IN THE SAME UNION AS THE RANK AND FILE with Williamson the State Secretary for both parties.

So there you have it. Your in your bosses union. They have control, you think you have control, but you don’t.

The system that we have now has destabilised our wonderful service politically for many years.

Ambos need to be in a union where there is a strict divide between the interests of management and the interests of the rank and file.

I recently sent an email to Jillian Skinner re the inability of ACircusNSW to supply adequate analgesic resources to the majority of officers. Her reply was prompt and requesting further info. We at outer metro Sydney have been nil stock for over a month now. ALS backup is rare and L5 usually on some crap job courtesy of Pro QA. Am I the only one with concerns ? PS there is lots of morph. in the safe. P1 can't use despite S8 authority that says we can. (subject to circus approval)Check with Pharmaceutical branch of Dept.Health. I did.

I was in HREA for 28 years, sub-branch president for over 14.

YES I support unions, BUT, if the sub-Branches can't get themselves orgainsed, how can HSU do what YOU expected to do?

I have heard a lot of complaints about HSU on this blog.

I have been out of HSU/HREA for 6 years since I got the boot tpi.

When I was in the union I received good support, BUT I had to fight for it. Ambulance is about what? 2% of HSU, they do have OTHER things to do besides look after YOU.

DO I know what they are like now, NO, I do not.

I did oppose Williamson as part of a team several years ago, we lost.

I mooted the idea of a co-operative as an alternative in the event that everyone quit HSU.

It seems however that the rank and file are more than happy with HSU as they did NOT resign en-mass.

As I stated previously a co-operative DOES have several advantages:

It is controlled AbSOLUTELY by its members.

You COULD (EVERY MEMBER)contract your labour to NSW Health, cut out the current management entirely.

The co-op would supply ALL training and use people like Bob Wright, Michael O'Rourke, Malcolm Fisher, Mark Crompton, etc (IF they were interested).

The co-op would ELECT ALL of the S/Os, D/Os and Supers.

Everyone COULD have their OWN company car for use with official business (IE going to work, go to other stations, training, etc.

The "service" would be reduced to supplying vehicles, equipment and stations, which could be done with some bean counter/s from Health, something the CURRENT crop at Rozelle forgets (they are ONLY there to support YOUR work with patients).

The co-op would control ALL discipline and disciplinary matters and would have the right to recruit, AND fire miscreants.

All funds for your services would be invested, you would get a composite wage.

all other entitlements would remain.

Promotion would be on merit, quals and seniority

At the end of the year ALL remaining funds would be distributed to the members

i'm in the country.
try a total 3 Officers on the roster (yes,TOTAL of 3).
we changed from a total of 2 Officers about 2 yrs ago.......
19 days working & 14 nights on-call out of 28......
imagine that the roster only ever guarantees 1 on-call for 14 out of those 28nights........
i'm living it.
its crap.
they keep forcing young Ambos out here who (understandably) don't want to be here.
they keep leaving.
the Station is s sh*t hole and nobody has the guts to fix it.
there are no incentives to keep you here.
the "points system" is a load of crap.
etc.etc.etc
i'm pissed off and no-one cares.
why the hell did i join???

I have over 20 years in this job and I am fed up with the union. If we don't get at least 20% in May I will be telling the pay office to send my union fees to a registered charity. Under law I believe that then I will still be able to have the same protection of the union without paying my hard earned cash to the weak people running the union.

Well the more support the better.
Someone has to speak up for ambo's because the ambo's that try and blow the whistle always get pushed out of the service.
Unfair dismissal?....no, the service uses taxpayer funded lawyers to run over your head to make sure you can't spill the behind the scenes story.
On that note, did you know that in NSW you only have 21 days to lodge an unfair dismissal claim against the ambulance service. After that, regardless of how guilty they are, your case wont proceed.

Ironic those 'running' the service are called 'managers'.....they should rename it to 'mis-managers'.

The union does nothing.
The NSW government don't do anything, but ask the clowns running ASNSW.."are you acting corruptly or inappropriately or neglecting to look after your staff?", ....what are they going to say...."oh well, yes that is the case"........oh please!

Management are sweeping too much under the carpet and they are using their staff as broomsticks to do it.

Thanks for supporting ambos. I have served for over 20 years and am a big supporter of Greg Rochford and his Executive. This is mainly because, believe it or not, things are better than they used to be in our service. He has set up a Professional Standards and Conduct Unit, sacked or maneuvered out a number of corrupt or incompetent senior uniformed managers within the service, and most of all he has stuck with us. I just hope he is not thrown out with the bath water so to speak after any investigation.

The main problem we face as I see it is having senior uniformed managers in the same union as the rank and file. It leads to collusion, coercion and corruption, but ultimately with the help of the union, constantly directs critism at the Executive and not to where the problems really lay.

Just to let Jillian know If she reads in here again that peoples lives are being put at risk in rural areas at the moment because of an instruction to reduce overtime at all cost.

With the introduction of Hot/Cold responses this was to make responding to CASUALTIES safer by allowing officers to attend jobs at normal speed. However in the hindsight to save a buck these cold responses are being held for up to 20 minutes before assigning a car to the call. They are even assigning the jobs to cars while they are still transporting the current patient they are on to ensure they meet their responsibilities in put a car on a casualty.

They are doing this when they have officers who are rostered on-call at home ready to respond. These officers are to stay at home and not go out and don't get called because the ASNSW wants to reduce overtime. What's the use of being on call.

The Cold casualties are still as such "CASUALTIES" and as a number 2 response should have a car assigned to attend immeadiately if there is one avail,not as current until the shift crew are finished and there is still on-call avail.

It's about time the public knew that the service doesnt care about anything but their budget. Because the more the Managers come in under budget the more they get paid.

We should paste and send this link to every ambo in the ASNSW to get a good cross section to work from and then create a silent register of Ambo's willing to committ to begining a New Union called NSW AMBULANCE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION. We could still use the current award and extract the conditions into our own agreement.

At the moment we are too politically aligned to the ALP to achieve the results required.

So lets gain some balls and mature into an association that is for us and not just paying funds towards the ALP's next election campaign

P.S. Was Jim Arneman then going fight against us if he got into state parliment. By commonwealth rules he should have resigned his position and should now have to reapply for his job as an Ambulance Officer. Meaning he can go out west like the other recruits! Why was he able to use the fact he was an Ambulance Officer which is against the policy in the SOPS. Because we have a Labour Government and they were protecting their own as were HSU.

If you Paid Your union fees you just supported the government who thinks your not worth more money.

I hope you read this. The murder-suicide at Baulkham Hills was carried out by a recently terminated paramedic. The Service's zero action and tolerance to his bullying and harrasing behaviour over the past 10 years is a joke. Management knew about his capabilities but chose not to act. We cannot let the service get away with sweeping this one under the carpet. Time to wake up and smell the coffee Greg.

This is a great idea having a place where ambulance officers can go and receive support, be heard and validated, as there definately is nowhere to go for that within the service. I have since left the job as I could no longer feel like my back was against the wall...what a back-to-front mixed up culture the ASNSW is.
